Safari Overview

This 4-day Tanzania midrange safari is an excellent choice if you want more time for game drives across the classic Northern Circuit than a short 2- or 3-day trip allows. The itinerary covers Tarangire National Park, the Central Serengeti, and the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater.

Compared with shorter safaris, the extra day gives you better opportunities to explore the Serengeti, follow recent wildlife sightings, and enjoy longer game drives instead of spending most of the time transferring between parks. You still cover three of Tanzania’s most rewarding wildlife destinations in a well-structured route.

Accommodation is in comfortable midrange lodges and permanent tented camps with private bathrooms and good meals. All game drives are in a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a professional English-speaking guide, giving you flexibility on timing and the ability to stay longer at interesting sightings.

This itinerary works well for travellers with limited time who still want a solid introduction to the Northern Circuit without feeling completely rushed.

Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arusha → Tarangire National Park

Your safari begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha or from the airport. After a short briefing you drive to Tarangire National Park (approximately 2 to 2.5 hours).

Tarangire is especially known for its large elephant herds, iconic baobab trees, and excellent dry-season concentrations of wildlife along the Tarangire River. You enjoy an afternoon game drive exploring different areas of the park, looking for elephants, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffes, and a variety of antelope. Predators such as lions and leopards are also present.

In the late afternoon you transfer to your midrange lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight.

Overnight: Midrange lodge or tented camp near Tarangire
Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Day 2

Tarangire → Central Serengeti National Park

After an early breakfast you enjoy a final short game drive as you exit Tarangire, then continue toward the Serengeti. The journey takes you through the highlands and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

You enter Serengeti National Park and begin game viewing on the way to the Central Serengeti (Seronera area). Seronera is one of the richest year-round wildlife habitats in the park thanks to the permanent water of the Seronera River system. It supports high densities of lions, leopards, cheetahs, and a wide range of herbivores.

After afternoon game drives you arrive at your midrange tented camp or lodge in the Central Serengeti for dinner and overnight.

Overnight: Midrange tented camp or lodge in Central Serengeti
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 3

Central Serengeti → Ngorongoro Conservation Area / Karatu

After breakfast you depart on a morning game drive as you gradually make your way south through the Serengeti. This final game drive in the park gives you another chance to look for predators and plains game before leaving the park boundaries.

You then drive toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The journey takes you across the crater highlands with scenic views. In the afternoon you arrive at your midrange lodge either on the crater rim or in the nearby town of Karatu. The rest of the afternoon is free to relax and prepare for the early start the following morning.

Overnight: Midrange lodge on the Ngorongoro crater rim or in Karatu
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 4

Ngorongoro Crater Tour → Arusha

You start early this morning in order to descend into the Ngorongoro Crater at opening time. The crater is the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. Its floor covers approximately 260 square kilometres and supports an extraordinarily high density of wildlife.

During approximately five hours of game viewing on the crater floor you can expect to see many of the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, and often black rhino, with leopard being more elusive). Large herds of zebra and wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, and numerous bird species are also commonly encountered. A picnic lunch is usually taken near the hippo pool.

In the early afternoon you ascend the crater wall and begin the drive back to Arusha. You will be dropped off at your hotel in Arusha or at the airport in the late afternoon, concluding your 4-day midrange safari.
